And that’s not principally because we used them too often in the past — though we’re somewhat guilty of that. We do our best, but finding words for worse than worst, a marker that Trump passed long ago, stumps us. Our society needs front pages beyond the usual front pages, superlatives beyond our superlatives, a thesaurus to supplement our thesaurus. Trump tests more than our sanity and surviving optimism. When you’ve been dwelling at Defcon 1, there’s no new emergency declaration for Americans deaf to Trump’s con.

It’s what he has fought all his life for, even battling his way through “friendly fire,” as Hunter Biden told me, in the Obama White House, when some Obama aides undermined him. It must have been awful when Obama took his vice president to lunch and nudged him aside for Hillary to run in 2016. He needs to gather the sharpest minds in his party and hear what they have to say, not engage in petty feuds. Of course, if he’s convicted, that could turbocharge his campaign even more. It’s a perfect playing field for the maleficent Trump: He learned in the 2016 race that physical and rhetorical violence could rev up his base.

Political violence in polarized U.S. at its worst since 1970s

Three academics who reviewed the cases say they add to growing evidence that America is grappling with the biggest and most sustained increase in political violence since the 1970s. Political violence surged for nearly a decade starting in the late-1960s – 1970 alone saw more than 450 cases, LaFree said. In contrast, much of today’s political violence is aimed at people – and most of the deadly outbursts tracked by Reuters have come from the right. “Political warfare”There’s no official tally of how many Americans die each year from political violence. Most of the fatal political violence identified by Reuters was carried out by people who embraced far-right views.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday she's not sure whether she will watch soon-to-be released body camera video from an officer who responded to the brutal attack on her husband last year at their home in San Francisco. The police video is scheduled for release Friday, according to an advisory from San Francisco Superior Court following a judge's order. Asked whether she would watch the video, Pelosi, D-Calif., said she doesn’t know. Paul Pelosi and Nancy Pelosi at the 2018 White House Correspondents' Dinner. The whole thing highlights how while the suspect, David DePape, may have invaded the Pelosi home, the GOP also bears its share of responsibility for it. It would be a mistake not to see how DePape was radicalized (at least in part) by a right-wing media that does the bidding of a Republican Party. Although some Republicans, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, did the right thing and publicly condemned the attack on Paul Pelosi, others on the right jumped at the chance to get some digs in. Following the attack on Paul Pelosi, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), said it best: “Somebody is going to die.” That’s very well what could have happened last week at the Pelosi residence. I came here to have a little chat with his wife,” DePape said he told Paul Pelosi, according to the memo.
Some social media users are saying that David DePape, the suspect in the Oct. 28 attack on Paul Pelosi told investigators that the two engaged in sexual relations and argued over drugs without providing proof of the claim. One Twitter user sharing the claim said, “David Depape tells investigators that he and Paul Pelosi were engaging in gay sex and an argument ensued over drugs” (here). The Department of Justice released the criminal complaint and affidavit (here) detailing the attack on Paul Pelosi at his residence. Reuters found no credible news reports that proved DePape told investigators he was involved with Paul Pelosi before the attack ensued. There’s no evidence to back claims that DePape told investigators that he and Paul Pelosi had engaged in sexual relations or argued over drugs.
However, the image shows DePape filming a wedding at City Hall in San Francisco in 2013. In the photos, DePape appears to be wearing the same blue clothing as in social media posts. DePape, 42, is accused of attacking Paul, 82, with a hammer after forcing his way into the couple’s home in San Francisco on Oct. 28. The image does not show DePape filming the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Read more about our work to fact-check social media posts (here).
